China News Service


C hina News Service (CNS), a non-government organization and one of the two major news agencies in China, was set up in Beijing on September 14, 1952 by Chinese media celebrities such as Jin Zhonghua, Hu Yuzhi and Hong Sisi. CNS serves mainly overseas Chinese readers. It is also a comprehensive source of news and culture for overseas Chinese, including those living in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

At present, its news dispatches and news photos are subscribed by over 170 newspapers, magazines, and radio and TV stations in 19 countries and regions. Some international news agencies often use or relay CNS's news releases and photos.


CNSBusiness Scope Includes ...

News dispatches
CNS offers about 60 dispatches in Chinese every day for newspapers and news agencies all over the world. It also offers handout "China News" in Chinese which is published in Beijing and Hong Kong mainly for the media at home and abroad. Since 1990, it started its English version service by fax as well as a computer network through its Hong Kong Branch.

Features and articles
Every month, CNS offers about 300 features and column articles to meet the demands of the media in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, as well as the overseas media in Chinese.

News photos
CNS dispatches about 500 news photos by telephotograph every month, covering important events and special themes about mainland China. It provides colour pictures at the request of newspapers and magazines in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and foreign countries. It also regularly provides overseas Chinese communities and Chinese institutions abroad with photos for exhibition.

Films, video and audio tape recordings
The Audio-Video Department of the China News Service produces or co-produces with the studios abroad feature and documentary films, television programmes, and various video and audio tape recordings in Mandarin Chinese, which are distributed all over the world.

Publications
CNS now has three monthlies: "Viewpoint", published by its headquarters in Beijing, "China Digest" by its Hong Kong Branch, and the "Europe-China Economy and Trade" by its French Branch in Paris.


C NS is guided by a board of directors who are themselves media celebrities at home and abroad. The operation of CNS is now managed by Director Guo Rui. CNS has a staff of 480 at present, among which 200 are reporters, correspondents and editors.

C NS has set up domestic branches in Guangdong, Fujian, Shanghai, Guangxi, Hainan, Beijing, Hubei, Shaanxi, Shandong, Anhui and Sichuan; sub-branches or correspondent stations in Tianjin, Liaoning, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Yunnan, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Shantou, Xiamen, Zhangzhou and Quanzhou. Apart from Hong Kong, it also boasts branches in Washington, Tokyo, Paris and Sydney, and there are reporters stationed in New York, Bangkok, Manila and Macau.

With advanced equipment, CNS has set up a computerized transmission network with Beijing, Hong Kong and New York as its key bases. According to a statistical study on 174 news agencies worldwide in 1982 by the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO), CNS was given a B grade.
